Jackson Heights Historic District, Queens, NY
The Jackson Heights Historic District is a residential development built in the early part of the 20th century, primarily between the 1910s and early 1950s. Jackson Heights was conceived, designed, and built by the Queensboro Corporation as a garden city. This unique design concept treated each block as an individual design unit, rather than as a group of individual lots to be sold. Buildings were sited on the perimeter of the block, generally with a standard setback, while spaces between the buildings or groups thereof provided access and views to shared open spaces at their centers. Most of the buildings in Jackson Heights are executed in picturesque revival styles with elements like loggias, slate and tile roofs, and decorative brickwork. The neighborhood also contains commercial and institutional structures, increasing the sense of a complete and self-sufficient town.
